2024 Carmel Valley Summer Symphony Intensive
Welcome back to another year of CVSS! This summer, we will be hosting the 9th Summer Symphony Intensive. During the two-week intensive, students will play alongside other musicians in a full symphony orchestra, as well as in smaller jazz and chamber ensembles. Students have the opportunity to work with professional musicians from local symphonies such as the San Diego Symphony and the La Jolla Symphony. Under professional guidance, students rehearse in the two-week intensive leading up to the final concert, which features a wide range of music selections including orchestral and chamber works. The intensive is recommended for middle to high school leveled musicians, and students will be able to work with fellow musicians at higher skill levels.
The intensive is completely free of cost! CVSS is a completely student-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, and our mission is to provide cost-free and accessible music education to all students. By participating in our intensive, students will be awarded up to 30+ community service hours for their time and hard work. If you have any questions about our intensive, feel free to reach out by emailing us at [email protected]. We hope to see you this summer! |

The Intensive
SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA INTENSIVE
All students in CVSS will participate in the Symphony Orchestra, which runs from 1 PM to 3 PM. Students will play in a full symphony orchestra setting (including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion).
CHAMBER ORCHESTRA INTENSIVE
The Chamber Orchestra Intensive is completely optional, but highly recommended for students who are experienced in ensemble playing. All students from the symphony orchestra are welcome to sign up for the chamber orchestra, which will run from 3 PM to 4 PM, after the symphony orchestra rehearsal. The chamber orchestra will focus on harder repertoire with a smaller group of musicians as compared to the symphony orchestra.
Students from both intensives will have the opportunity to work with professional musicians as well as receive up to 30+ community service hours for their participation in our intensive. Because of the short length of our intensive, we ask for students to be able to participate throughout the 2-week intensive and the concert, and have no more than 3 absences (reported ahead of time). Further details about instrumentation, age, and skill requirements can be found on our FAQ page.

2024 CVSS Solo Competition
As a part of our 2024 intensive, we are hosting the CVSS Solo Competition for our students to present their solo repertoire that they are working on. The winner of the solo competition will be featured in our final concert, where they will perform their solo piece. Depending on the repertoire and the instrumentation, we will provide a piano or orchestral accompaniment. Participation in the solo competition is completely optional, but strongly encouraged as it is an opportunity for students to receive valuable feedback on their solo works from professional musician judges. Note that this competition is only open to participants of the intensive in high school or below.
Applicants will submit a video audition (up to 10 minutes in length), which will be sent to and reviewed by a panel of professional musician judges. No late submissions will be accepted. Results of the competition will be announced by early July, and judges' comments will also be sent to each applicant.
Solo Competition guidelines:
- The solo piece must be a complete work, or a movement from a complete work written for the instrument. The piece can be written for a soloist, with piano accompaniment, or with orchestral accompaniment.
- The solo piece can be up to 10 minutes max. Cuts are allowed if needed.
- An upload of the original score for the piece must be provided.
- Video submissions are required. The video must be unedited, and the soloist and instrument must be visible at all times. Video quality will not impact the judging.
- For pieces that require accompaniment, accompaniment is not required for the submission.
