2023 Intensive
What are the skill requirements to participate in the intensive?
Although there is no skill requirement to participate in the intensive, we strongly recommend students to have at least 2-3 years of experience with their instrument. Many of our students are in high school and have had multiple years of ensemble experience. We will do our best to accommodate students with less experience, but it may be challenging for them to keep up with the pace of the ensemble.

Is there an age requirement for the intensive?
We do not have a strict age requirement. However, in past intensives, most of our students have been middle or high school students. Students middle school and up are encouraged to join our intensive.

What does a typical day at CVSS look like?
The intensive runs from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM on the weekdays. For students in Symphony Orchestra only, rehearsals will be from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM. The intensive will include bonding activities, masterclasses, as well as rehearsals. During rehearsals, professional musicians from local symphony orchestras come in for coaching. Detailed schedules will be sent out to participants later. Students who also choose to participate in Chamber Orchestra will stay for an additional hour (until 4:00 PM) for additional pieces.

What is your attendance policy? Can a student miss multiple days of the intensive?
Up to 3 absences are allowed for a student, and absences must be reported through the absence reporting form below at least 24 hours in advance. Given the length of our intensive, it is important for students to be present in order to keep up with our pacing. Attendance will be taken on a daily basis, and students will receive community service hours based on their attendance. Please note that students who miss more than 3 days must let us know through email ([email protected]) ahead of time.

Can students join the intensive on piano?
Given the symphonic setting of our program, the number of pianists will be limited to one per piece as most orchestral works do not have a part for piano. If your student plays a secondary orchestral instrument such as a woodwind, string, or brass, we heavily encourage the student to play that instrument. We cannot guarantee that every pianist will have a part on piano and may be allocated to the percussion section as need-be.

How do I help CVSS? Where will donations go?
We accept donations through HackClub and will be collecting more donations throughout the intensive and at our final concert. Donations will be given back to local music programs to further support accessible music education.
